I enjoy teaching To Kill a Mockingbird for many reasons. First, I love to explore the background information about events of the Great Depression and the way people lived all those years ago. I love hearing comments from my students as they look at the differences between the past and the present regarding the way people talked and treated each other and the way children played and used their imaginations. I love hearing and discussing the emotions my students experience as they follow Scout, Jem and Atticus through the eyes of Scout. This book has so much to offer through the vocabulary, the theme and the truths of the past and how they relate to the world today. It's a great book!

There are many reasons I love teaching To Kill a Mockingbird. For the purpose of this discussion, I will focus on one: the reactions of my students to the verdict. It seems that students don't truly grasps how unfair the world was in the deep South during that time period to certain people until the verdict is shared. All of the sudden, all the historical information students learned becomes relevant and the conversations and connections deepen. It is a magical moment. For the past six years I have worked in a high poverty school with over 50% of students self-identified as non-white. We have a large EL population. The struggles with racial inequality resonate with many of our students. This book still changes lives. I love it!
