PARTNER PROFILE

The Rory Staunton Foundation for Sepsis Prevention works to increase public awareness of sepsis, an extreme response to any kind of infection. Sepsis is one of the leading causes of death in the United States, claiming more lives than AIDS, breast and prostate cancers, and stroke combined: between 250,000 and 500,000 annually. Because sepsis is preventable through good hygiene and wound care and treatable with antibiotics if diagnosed early, it is essential that all students and their parents understand the dangers and signs of sepsis and how it can be prevented and treated.  The Foundation has developed a series of interactive lessons and learning tools to teach students in grades K-12 about infection and sepsis. The Foundation was established in 2012 following the preventable death of 12-year-old Rory Staunton who died when a graze acquired playing basketball at school led to sepsis which went undiagnosed and untreated.
