The representation of the age of the Earth must include a graphic demonstration of the immensity of geologic time, as this is a very difficult concept to grasp. The different methods used to determine the age of the Earth are an important factor in this concept. In elementary grades, fossils are used to compare what once lived to what lives now, but the concept of Earth’s age and the age of the fossils were not included (the concept of billions or millions of years was not age-appropriate). In grade 8, the concept of index fossils is a way to build toward understanding relative dating.
