Connecting Students Through Conversation: Bringing Oral History into the Classroom with StoryCorps

Please join Emily Janssen, Perri Chinalai for a multimedia workshop hosted by StoryCorps and Share My Lesson. You'll learn about a national oral history nonprofit that preserves and shares stories to create a culture of listening, empathy, and compassion.

This webinar is not available On Demand. Original Air Date: March 26, 2020

During this presentation, we’ll explore lesson plans designed to help middle and high school students strengthen the power of their own voice. StoryCorps will also share free resources associated with their Great Thanksgiving Listen campaign — a national movement that empowers young people to connect with an elder, mentor, friend, or someone they admire and to record an interview with them using the free StoryCorps app during the months of November and December.

Leave this workshop with tools to engage and empower your students in both the classroom and community through conversation. Help your students become active listeners, record intergenerational conversations, and use free technology to record and archive conversations with StoryCorps and the Library of Congress.

Available for one-hour of PD credit. A certificate of completion will be available for download at the end of your session that you can submit for your school's or district's approval.

On Demand version is available in closed captioning in English and Spanish.

Story Corps is known already as a great institution. The presenters enlightened the attendees as to why. They presented info we could use and got us to thinking about how we could use this resources. The clips from Story Corps were perfect for showing how telling stories builds relationships and connections.

This was the most useful webinar I have attended this week. Great resource to use immediately as I begin this "distance learning" thing with my students in Ontario. THANK YOU

Great resources and lessons.

This is a game changer! Especially for young people who need the opportunity to express themselves and to have their voices heard. For me as a mentor to high school students, it is a connector. It has motivated me so much.

I loved this webinar as I am a future ENL teacher and a former ELL; storytelling becomes an essential part of teaching to my students, so they can relate it to themselves as they learn and get acclimated to the new country/language.
