This webinar explores the film Just Mercy and the lesson plans that support and extend its use in class. The film tells the true story of young lawyer Bryan Stevenson and his crusade to exonerate Walter McMillian, a Black man unjustly arrested, convicted, and sentenced for murder. Lessons place the events of the film in the context of centuries of racial injustice; develop such key concepts as bias, racism, and resilience; and explore the inequities of the legal system that sentenced McMillian. Students learn to write case briefs on landmark cases and examine other real cases of unjustly convicted individuals.
In this webinar, teachers will learn strategies for culturally responsive teaching that will give them confidence in their ability to work with students on such difficult and crucially important topics. They will learn how to access all curriculum materials, including a student study guide for remote learning.
Available for one-hour of PD credit. A certificate of completion will be available for download at the end of your session that you can submit for your school's or district's approval.
