Why did Schubert's songs inspire Ed Sheeran?!

[To see the video, click the link ‘WATCH HERE’ at the bottom of this text].

This video will inspire students to appreciate and understand classical music in more depth by relating it to familiar pop songs that they know and love. Ideally for students between the ages of 12 and 18.

The videos will trigger an insightful and analytical listening approach to popular songs, helping children to consider the history of music and the meanings behind certain styles of composition, even when they are 'casually' listening to their favourite songs, at the weekend for example. They will also help children to grasp the appeal of classical music, and the significant impact it had on later styles.

This particular video briefly outlines Schubert's verse structure and how it may have inspired modern pop artists like Ed Sheeran. I talk about melody lines, matching rhythms, rhyming and line structures.

Students could perhaps use similar ideas in their own songwriting, or make references to their knowledge acquired from the video in written work. Many future videos will include curriculum-based repertoire. Or if this particular video does not relate to current schemes of work, the video could make for a fun, engaging and inspiring conclusion to a lesson.
