About This Webinar
Join Anne Harper Charity Hudley, Christine Mallinson, Kimberly Bigelow and Rachel Samuels for an interactive workshop that will guide you in using poetry to teach about language variation in the late elementary grades. This workshop will bring out the poetry in your students and in you!
Through activities such as writing “I Am” poems, we will discuss how to use poetry to highlight the academic, social, and emotional aspects of language and literacy. We will discuss the concepts of dialect, language varieties, and translanguaging (using two or more languages to communicate and learn), and will focus on how poetry can be a tool for integrating these concepts into your teaching.
This workshop is for reading and English language arts teachers in late elementary grades but could be useful for others. We suggest viewing the linguistic autobiography webinar before viewing the poetry webinar.
