Join Anne Harper Charity Hudley, Christine Mallinson, Kimberly Bigelow and Rachel Samuels for an interactive session designed to help you affirm students’ linguistic identity and position students as experts by designing a language and literacy equity audit for your classroom or learning community.

Culture and communication matter. Much like an equity audit, a language and literacy equity audit actively identifies the linguistic strengths of your students by employing a method of inquiry that is designed to help recognize, normalize and value the language varieties in our learning communities. The audit will help you support literacy in its multiple definitions and learn with students as linguistic experts by valuing what they know about language—both those students whose voices are typically privileged in learning environments and those whose voices typically are not. Aspects of the audit are designed to be used with teachers, students, administrators and community members.

This session is for reading and English language arts teachers in all grade levels. We suggest viewing the linguistic autobiography webinar before viewing this audit webinar.

For each of the four Reading Opens the World Webinars in May and June, AFT will randomly choose 100 recipients who attended live to receive a gift card worth $25 for the First Book Marketplace. Winners must teach in Title I eligible schools and attend the webinar live. Anne H. Charity Hudley, Ph.D., is Professor of Education and African-American Studies and Linguistics, by courtesy at Stanford University. Her research and publications address the relationship between language variation and educational practices and policies across the educational lifespan from preschool through graduate school, particularly for Black students. She has a special dedication to creating high-impact practices for underrepresented students in higher education. Charity Hudley is the co-author of numerous publications and four books: The Indispensable Guide to Undergraduate Research, We Do Language: English Language Variation in the Secondary English Classroom, Understanding English Language Variation in U.S. Schools, and Talking College Making Space for Black Language Practices in Higher Education. Charity Hudley is a fellow of the Linguistic Society of America and a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS).

Christine Mallinson is Professor of Language, Literacy, and Culture and Director of the Center for Social Science Scholarship at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). She is the author or editor of five books and multiple other publications that focus on language diversity, culture, and education in the United States. Her research has contributed to models of how language is used by students from historically marginalized groups in educational contexts from Pre-K through graduate school and has informed local and state curricular and educational policy and practice. She has worked with hundreds of K-12 educators at public and independent schools throughout the country, especially in Maryland, Virginia, and North Carolina.

Kimberly has been an educator for sixteen years and currently works in an elementary public school as an assistant principal of literacy in Washington, DC. Kimberly has an M.Ed. in Elementary Education and a Post-graduate certificate in Educational Leadership and Administration, both from The George Washington University. Kimberly is endorsed in elementary education (1-5), special education (PK-12), and educational leadership and administration (K-12). Kim’s areas of interest are in early literacy acquisition, and equity, inclusion, and diversity. Kimberly is currently enrolled as a doctoral student in Educational Leadership and Administration.

Rachel works in a public school as an elementary literacy and student support specialist. Rachel has an MAEd in Reading, Language, and Literacy and a BA in Linguistics and Elementary Education, both from the College of William & Mary. Rachel is endorsed in elementary education (PreK-6), teaching English to speakers of other languages (K-12), and as a reading specialist (K-12). In 2017, she earned the distinction of National Board Certified Teacher in Early and Middle Childhood Literacy. Rachel was honored as the Virginia State Reading Association’s 2019 Reading Teacher of the Year. Rachel’s interest areas are the interface between literacy and linguistics, multi-tiered systems of support, and school improvement.
