About This Lesson

Created for a fifth grade class the focus was on finding out what life was like for people living in Jamestown. The students will get to read/compare first hand accounts. After they learn about Jamestown they will have to write a letter to the teacher about what it's like living in Jamestown as if they were a settler. I incorporated group or partner work depending on teachers preference. I also incorporated the use of technology such as: a projector, and ipads/computers to aid the lesson. To end the lesson is a culminating activity called To be or not to be Jamestown? That is the question!

The lesson allows students to use historical reading skills (sourcing, contextualization, close reading, and corroboration. This is a powerful social studies lesson!
