About This Lesson

By identifying the prime factors of numbers from 1 to 100, students discover the relationship between factors and multiples. Although a daunting task at first, students will begin to notice repeated calculations and shortcuts. For example, all the multiples of 10 contain the prime factors 5 and 2. By constructing prime factor trees, students will practice basic multiplication facts and multi-digit operations. Students will color the multiples of 2, 5 and 10, discuss their strategies, and find the greatest common factor using prime factorization. [MP8] [6.NS.B]
