About This Lesson
With an emphasis on the period of Clayton Township's existence, 1858 to 1887, this microregional study explores the history of African Americans in Clayton, Franklinville, and Glassboro from the Jacksonian era to the turn of the Twentieth century. Students utilize primary source materials such as census and vital statistic records to discover, investigate, and evaluate pre-industrial New Jersey society through the prism of the Black experience. Subtopics include labor, recreation, religion, and education. The study is organized into five lessons, each approximately 45 minutes. Part of a 30 question/response activity packet is completed at each session.
