About This Lesson

Inheritance of traits unit plan aligned to NGSS for students in a 9th-grade biology class. Students develop and defend a claim about the inheritance of traits into with the final product a lab report. This so far is a two-week unit plan but will be further developed into a 23-day unit plan. Lessons involve investigating and describing the patterns of various inheritance patterns, locating valid resources, culminating data,  and utilizing the data for statistical and conceptual analysis for genetic variation of traits. Expansion of previous genetic topics of DNA and chromosomes into the proteins they code for from amino acids, inheritance patterns, and the possible genetic mutations that can occur that provide the basis of evolution. Students develop the ability to utilize academic language and topics through repetition, hands-on activities, and inquiry.
