About This Lesson

In this unit, Students will investigate the fourth transformation: a dilation. They will access their prior knowledge about scale drawings and make connections to dilations. Students will perform dilations on the coordinate plane, define similar figures, and generalizations about the coordinates when a dilation is performed. They will use dilations to verify similarity between two or more figures. Students will demonstrate understanding of the standards by: defining and identifying dilations and similar figures, identify the scale factor of a dilation, dilate geometric figures on the coordinate plane, describe the changes of the x-and y- coordinates of a figure after a dilation, identify corresponding sides and corresponding angles of similar figures, explain how transformations can be used to prove that two figures are similar, and describe a sequence of transformations that determine whether two figures are similar.
