About This Lesson

Before students trust what a business tells them, can they say which parts a state agency keeps on file? In this one-period activity for grades 9-12, students meet three public records (business registration, state license, disciplinary action), sort eight website statements into "record" or "claim", and then pull up one real license with a state agency's lookup tool. They write down what the record displays, its web address and the day they viewed it, and compare all of that with how the company words things.

The download holds a two-page student worksheet, a teacher key with answers and discussion points, and a table of lookup tools run by agencies in California, Texas, Washington and Colorado, each opened on October 13, 2026. It fits units on consumer economics, civics, personal finance and media literacy. Phones are enough for the lookup.
