The US Department of Justice (DOJ) reported in a 2015 study that nearly 60 percent of children surveyed were exposed to violence, crime, or abuse within that year, either directly (as victims) or indirectly (as witnesses) — many in their own homes. These traumatic events harm the development of a child’s brain and body.

Futures Without Violence has partnered with the DOJ to create a comprehensive suite of Changing Minds resources for educators working with school-aged children and youth.

In this workshop, we will feature several of the newest Changing Minds NOW tools that focus on supporting a diverse collection of adults in a school setting (e.g., teachers, counselors, administrators, and others) to address issues among their students related to trauma from exposure to violence. The session will highlight a creative infographic produced in collaboration with AFT along with a series of videos focused on 5 “everyday gestures” we can do to make a real difference in the classroom and beyond.

I was happy to hear ACE mentioned in conjunction with education. After reading 'The Deepest Well by Dr. Nadine Burke Harris I wanted a way to inform my teaching; in a way that I can be a tool for healing. The infographic "School Personnel Can Help Students Heal from Trauma" recognized the intuitive methods of my teaching practices. Celebrating, listening, collaborating, comforting, and inspiring were actions I remember the caring adults in my life practiced, and now I try to practice. Minimizing triggers motivates me to make the classroom feel safe; through new class furniture, new lights, colorful classroom materials, and community agreements. I like the whole school approach and look forward to the positive changes our school administrator will welcome. Currently remaining calm in turbulent times.

Felt like this webinar was just the tip of the iceberg! So many wonderful and pertinent practices that we can all benefit from, and especially our youth. I would like more information who to contact in my state of New Hampshire to advocate for training and support in the school I work in. Mr. OConnel was so very engaging in his presentation and film clips added conviction to his intentions. I am very glad I signed up for this presentation! And will exuberantly recommend it to my Special Needs Department. Well done! Thank you! The only advise I might offer, is that it moved too quickly and I found all of the comments distracting-trying to read and listen and comment at the same time made the experience a bit hectic for me--sort of like experiencing like over stimulation :) But otherwise, bravo!

Very pertinent information; especially for our times. Families ares split, dissolving and students sometimes do not have an avenue to express their feelings and/or effectively cope with the various situations that surround them. Thank you for all your work in this most essential area. Alan Johnson
