About This Lesson

Direct Characterization: When the author directly tells the reader what a character is like by explicitly stating their personality traits, appearance, or qualities.

Indirect Characterization: When the author reveals a character's personality indirectly through their speech, thoughts, effect on others, actions, and looks (STEAL method) rather than stating it outright.
