This resource features an interactive, hands-on approach that helps students see how strong informational writing is built. Using a simple color-coding system and visual text mapping, students closely analyze mentor texts to identify key parts of effective paragraphs, recognize how ideas are developed with facts and evidence, and understand how reflection strengthens meaning.

As students break down each model text, they build spatial awareness of structure, deepen comprehension of the standards, and develop the metacognitive skills needed to revise and improve their own writing. A follow-up cohesion challenge helps students notice transitions and the “connective tissue” that keeps ideas flowing smoothly from sentence to sentence.

Each mentor text is also paired with three source articles and multiple Depth of Knowledge (DOK) activity ideas, giving students rich content to read, discuss, and write about in small groups, whole class lessons, independent work, homework, or direct instruction.

The most common barrier for elementary writers is simply not knowing how to start. Writing Athletes removes this "Blank Page" fear. Students interact with professionally edited mentor texts and structured activities that model what successful writing looks like. They deconstruct and internalize these exemplars, building the 'muscle memory' needed to transition from emerging to high-performing writers. The result: clearer organization, stronger evidence, and more confident writers.
