About This Lesson
Moon Phases: Predict, Test, Explain — a free 20–25 minute classroom investigation for Grades 4–8.
Students first predict what portion of the Moon appears illuminated at New, First Quarter, Full and Last Quarter. Then they use Space Atlas's browser-based Moon Phase Simulator to move the Moon through each position and compare the Sun–Earth–Moon system view with the Earth-facing Moon view. The two-page PDF includes a student investigation table, prediction and explanation prompts, a suggested teacher sequence, answer guidance and a discussion of real orbital geometry.
Suggested learning sequence: 2 minutes to elicit misconceptions; 5 minutes to predict; 7 minutes to test the four presets; 5 minutes to explain; and 3 minutes to reflect. The guiding question is why Earth's shadow does not explain the ordinary monthly Moon phases. The activity is suitable for teacher-guided school or homeschool use.

The model intentionally compresses distance, enlarges celestial bodies and simplifies lunar orbital inclination. It is a conceptual visualization, not an ephemeris or eclipse prediction tool. The hosting site is free to access without a learner account but uses Google Analytics and Google AdSense. Educators should independently assess learner-privacy, accessibility and school-device requirements.
