New research shows that witnessing traumatic events can impact the physical development of a child’s brain – potentially leading to lifelong health and social issues. But teachers can help reverse the effects. As a supportive, caring adult in a child’s life, you can be an important factor in helping children overcome the effects of trauma.

First, Futures without Violence experts will review how five everyday gestures can help young people heal from trauma. Participants will be the first to see brand new materials created just for teachers, which highlight simple, practical tools to help build classroom communities that are trauma-informed and support healthy development. Building off Futures without Violence, experts from McDowell County Board of Education will provide on the ground school examples and examine the 7 characteristics of a trauma informed school and the challenges that school staff experiences during implementation. Participants will engage with assessment questions used in determining how their school’s protocol would address students exposed to trauma and violence. The presentation will introduce resiliency and protective factors. Finally, McDowell County Board of Education experts will identify the three areas to target for promoting resiliency in our students and will show data that will substantiate the importance that protective factors have on a successful outcome for children.
