I am a graduate of Brooklyn College 1978 School of Education with a BA in Elementary Education with extensive experience in the Open Classroom setting and use of Developmentally Appropriate practice. I began my professional career in Brooklyn NY in District 15 and moved to Long Island where I taught in the Hempstead School District while pursuing my Masters degree at Stony Brook University completed in 1992 with a concentration in Labor and Civil Rights. I returned to teach in Brooklyn and a year later in 1993 began teaching early grades closer to home at Barnum Woods Elementary School where I remained until "retiring" in 2017.
During those years, and the years since I have been tutoring and volunteering with the local NAACP NYS Conference developing workshops for the NYS LIFTED Parent Leadership Academy and in 2019 I was appointed to chair the education department guiding 56 branches. I also authored a National NAACP 2010 resolution on effects of Vision and Learning which was the basis to passing The Atticus Act for Early Vision Screening Programs in Schools.
Additionally, I have served as Co- President of the East Meadow Association of Retired Teachers (EMART) a local chapter of NYSUT, as well as the Super Administrator for FREEPORT Dollars for Scholars, a local chapter of Scholarship America, FREEPORT CARES, and Equity4 LI Youth and I Vice President of the local NAACP.
I am a wife and mother of two successful grown children, my son is a music educator and my daughter is a doctor of Biomedical Engineering who have helped to give me support, and perspective over the years to inform my teaching.
