About This Webinar
Student filmmakers Zahra Rahimi and Hosai Rasuli immigrated to the United States from Afghanistan during high school. In this 2024 Share My Lesson Virtual Conference session, they will discuss their documentary short and related art about the lives of young Afghan women and the challenges of their journey to the United States. Joined by their teachers, Ms. Rahimi and Ms. Rasuli demonstrate how student voice and student-led projects advance student growth and learning and can re-shape our understanding of the world through students' lenses.
From the filmmakers:
"Everyday, women’s rights in Afghanistan get ignored, simply because they are women. They're not even having the natural rights of being a woman: going to school, getting their education, having the simple rights. Things are going backwards. And we hope that people hear about it and do something.
These are the stories of three brave young women who risked their lives to tell their stories. They do not speak for all of the women in Afghanistan. There are lots of untold and unheard stories. So by sharing this documentary, we want people to think about those women who can’t share their stories themselves. We have the ability and opportunity here to help those who are in need. They need someone to be a voice for them and advocate for their rights.
Even though things are terrible, we are a people who never lose hope. We never get tired of advocating and telling stories and letting people know what’s going on. We have hope that things can get better, but we need people to help. There is always a way. We don’t want these stories to be ignored."
