About This Webinar
Join AFT President Randi Weingarten and Share My Lesson for an important update on the state of public education in this special keynote session for the 2023 Virtual Conference!
Not surprisingly, teachers, school support staff, higher ed faculty and parents have continued to face challenges of teaching, learning and connecting in the 2022-23 school year, and we know more challenges are ahead. Our public schools, our democracy, our freedoms, and the well-being of our families and communities are all on the line. Learn how the AFT is working alongside members and community members to prioritize what our kids need—and what educators need—to help kids thrive and succeed.
In December 2022, the AFT commissioned a survey to examine public education as a 2022 voting issue and the public’s education priorities for 2023 and beyond. We heard you: The top priorities include developing students’ fundamental skills in reading, math and science; ensuring all children, regardless of background, have an opportunity to succeed; developing critical-thinking and reasoning skills; teaching practical life skills; and preparing students to succeed in college or careers. We asked respondents to prioritize policies for improving public education. Expanding access to career and technical education, addressing staff shortages, reducing class size, and improving literacy skills top the list.
Weingarten will discuss specific programs designed to support our members and their work—and how you can be a part of them. Of special note, with the Reading Opens the World campaign, the AFT has worked to improve reading instruction with research-based resources and courses that have helped tens of thousands of educators teach reading more effectively. Last year, 1 million free books were distributed and 1 million more are planned for this year.
Together, we can accomplish what would be impossible to do alone.
