About This Webinar

Join this webinar with Share My Lesson and Reading Universe to learn about a free new resource with evidence-based strategies and practical guidance to help students learn to read.

Teaching children to read is a science—one that takes a lot of love and brings a lot of joy. But when children struggle to read, their teachers often struggle too. With a classroom full of children, it is very hard to determine what each learner needs. And it’s difficult to know where to turn for the most trustworthy guidance. This webinar will help you!

Over the past two decades, innovators in Mississippi developed professional training to ensure that every teacher in the state had expertise in literacy instruction—and fourth-grade reading achievement soared. Now, what they learned is available for free to all through readinguniverse.org (which the AFT is proud to sponsor).

In this webinar, first-grade teacher Erika Bryant and Reading Universe senior adviser Kelly Butler discuss how reading instruction in the elementary grades has changed in Mississippi and how all teachers can develop expertise at their own pace through Reading Universe. Unlike other websites, Reading Universe has been built from the start with a cadre of skilled teachers and researchers, and it’s filled with videos of excellent instruction in real classrooms.

Note: Current content on Reading Universe spans kindergarten to first grade. However, new content is being added daily to the interactive prototype, which will eventually cover preK-6 and include resources specifically for families. Anyone interested in literacy and teaching reading is welcome to attend and learn about this exciting new resource.

When You Register, You Can Order Free Copies of a Special American Educator on Literacy
The new issue of AFT's quarterly journal, American Educator, covers evidence-based strategies for parents and teachers to help develop kids’ reading skills. It features short, family-friendly articles by reading teachers and researchers, from “Helping Children with Significant Reading Problems,” to “Learning to Read and Write in Two or More Languages,” with five articles in Spanish. In addition to making this issue free online, we’ve printed an extra 100,000 copies for educators to share with families. Order free copies at go.aft.org/btz.

A Good Introduction
The webinar "Helping Students to Read" is a good introduction to other online resources that are available on the subject. I am particularly looking forward to viewing resources on "Reading Universe" and "AdLit.org".
