Join Teaching Tolerance, the Anti-Defamation League, and Share My Lesson for a reflection on the rhetoric of the 2016 election and its impact on students.
With a few weeks left until the election, we are bringing together two expert organizations to discuss the polarizing nature of the election and the impact they are seeing in communities across the nation.
According to a Southern Poverty Law Center survey of 2,000 teachers, “the presidential campaign is having a profoundly negative impact on school children across the country.” Specifically, the survey found that:
- More than two-thirds of the teachers reported that students – mainly immigrants, children of immigrants and Muslims – have expressed concerns or fears about what might happen to them or their families after the election.
- More than half have seen an increase in uncivil political discourse.
- More than a third have observed an increase in anti-Muslim or anti-immigrant sentiment.
- More than 40 percent are hesitant to teach about the election.
Both organizations will discuss the resources they are using to help teachers discuss the election and counter bias.
