About This Lesson
Overview
An Egypt unit usually opens with a textbook page. This opens with a made object. Students use three interactive tools to produce a single assembled ID card, and along the way meet three ideas the unit will return to: that hieroglyphs record sounds rather than letters, that the Egyptian year was an agricultural instrument, and that a deity was defined by a role, a form, and a home city.
There is no assessment. This lesson exists to earn student attention for the unit that follows it.
Learning objectives
Students will be able to:
- Explain that hieroglyphic signs in a cartouche represent consonant sounds, not English letters, and that a cartouche marked a royal name.
- Locate a modern date in the Egyptian civil calendar and name its season and the farming activity happening then.
- Describe one deity using a structured profile — sacred role, form, sacred sign, and cult city.
- Ask at least one question about why a writing system or a calendar is built the way it is.
