Attached are assignment pages that our students calculate the area of the given shapes and then use that to calculate the estimated tensile strength.  Formula is Area x Tensile strength per square inch = Total strength of item

We use the tensile strengths of:

67,000 #/sq. inch for steel and

26,000 #/sq. inch for aluminum.

Give an informal argument for the formulas for the circumference of a circle, area of a circle, volume of a cylinder, pyramid, and cone.
Apply concepts of density based on area and volume in modeling situations (e.g., persons per square mile, BTUs per cubic foot).
Define appropriate quantities for the purpose of descriptive modeling.
