About This Lesson

The first lesson plan in a unit on the difference between Standard English and African American Vernacular English in Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God. The purpose of this lesson is to expose students to the differences between African American Vernacular English and Standard English while communicating the value of both forms of language and educating students on the nature of using specific dialects/forms of a language in specific contexts. The timing of this lesson is appropriate because it will be given after we have already read Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston and explored the various themes, composition, and implications of the work. Therefore, students will already be familiar with the language in this work.
