10. Freedom Schools for Racial Justice

  • In the wake of Brown v. Board of Education, the white school leaders in Prince Edward County close public schools while opening a whites-only private academy. AFT sets up "Freedom Schools" to help students who have been out of school for nearly five years.

11. Engaging the Global Community

  • "Democracy in Education, Education for Democracy" has guided AFT's international efforts since its inception. Now, as education unions around the world confront similar challenges, AFT is more engaged than ever in promoting public education around the world.
