About This Lesson

This is a 10 lesson unit plan covering descriptive and narrative writing techniques to apply to a 3 paragraph report about each student's favorite holiday.  I address how to write an introduction and 2 body paragraphs about holiday preparation and celebration on the day of the holiday.  Students apply specific writing techniques to personal poems, they recognize these techniques in short stories and song lyrics, and then they apply the writing to their own report.  They also deliver an oral presentation of their report. Formative assessments and peer review occur throughout the unit.  It culminates with a summative assessment in the form of a game of Jeopardy.

Use precise words and phrases, relevant descriptive details, and sensory language to convey experiences and events.
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
Introduce a topic; organize ideas, concepts, and information, using strategies such as definition, classification, comparison/contrast, and cause/effect; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
Develop the topic with relevant facts, definitions, concrete details, quotations, or other information and examples.
With some guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach.
