The American Psychological Association is a strong proponent of efforts to prevent gun violence through increased research, access to mental health services, and funds for training more psychologists and other mental health professionals.
APA-wide initiatives to prevent gun violence have involved communications with the White House, executive agencies, Congress, other organizations, APA members, the news media and the general public in support of vital mental and behavioral health services, training and research. One key goal of these initiatives is to reduce the stigma associated with mental health problems by clarifying that mental disorders are not the root cause of violent behavior.
Review some of those initiatives in this resource.
