About This Lesson
Celebrate Women’s Equality Day by introducing students to Bella Abzug, the trailblazing congresswoman and activist who helped establish the observance. This video explores Abzug’s advocacy for women’s rights, voting rights, affordable child care, LGBTQ+ rights, environmental protections and peace while examining the difference between symbolic recognition and equality in practice.
Accompanying middle and high school worksheets include pre-viewing prompts, comprehension questions, vocabulary activities, quote and evidence analysis, civic connections and reflection exercises. Students will consider the achievements and limitations of the 19th Amendment, examine how organizing can create change, and reflect on the continuing struggle for equality.
