About This Lesson
The AFT provides CTE students and schools with free OSHA training and the certification exam. Occupational Safety and Health credentials give students a leg up and may be required for construction, culinary, mining and some energy and manufacturing jobs.
The AFT trains career tech teachers directly so that they can issue OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 cards to their students for both construction and general industry workplaces. The AFT provides the training for free, and cards for students cost $8. The AFT currently has around 300 or so members who have these credentials.
Many states require employees to have an OSHA 10 in construction before they’re even considered for employment – a cost savings of literally hundreds of dollars for these students. AFT trained career tech teachers tailor the material to their specific shop hazards and give students a leg up to know what rights they have on the job and what actions the employer must take to keep them safe.
In the resources section, you will find documents and outreach brochures that explain the program. Additional resources include: information on why CTE is important, success stories from students that have participated in workforce development programs, and videos/stories from districts that have implemented workforce development programs.
