## About This Lesson

The big ideas for this lesson are that many real-world scenarios involve 2 things changing—called VARIABLES—and that independent variables cause the change for dependent variables. We can develop a way to discern which is which by using “Does ______ depend on _________, or does ___________ depend on ____________ (the other way around)?” statements. This will help students understand the relationship between the variables. Lesson objective: identify independent & dependent variables and use them to write algebraic expressions for real-world scenarios. Aligned to CCSS: 6.EE.9

### Standards

Use variables to represent two quantities in a real-world problem that change in relationship to one another; write an equation to express one quantity, thought of as the dependent variable, in terms of the other quantity, thought of as the independent variable. Analyze the relationship between the dependent and independent variables using graphs and tables, and relate these to the equation.
