About This Lesson

This lesson takes an intentionally broad and shallow approach to foundational chemistry concepts as a preparation for the rest of the year. The Unit covers key terminology and reviews middle school chemistry.  It also has plenty of hands-on explorations to get students excited about chemistry class and collaborative learning to help students get to know each other at the start of the school year.

Focus is on :

1. What is matter made of? (Key terms: Element, atom, compound, molecule, mixture)

2. What are the properties of matter? How are the properties measured? (simple and compound units, intensive and extensive properties)

Unit includes links to editable slides and printables.
