Key Questions to inquire: Who was Deng Xiaoping? How did he rise to power?
The objective of this lesson is for students to familiarize themselves with the actions and experiences, failures and events of Deng Xiaoping’s life. They are to relate these to the historical developments in China and through this process develop awareness of the conditions through which Deng rose to power after Mao’s death.
At the end of this lesson it is hoped that students will be able to
- Identify key events in Deng Xiaoping’s life that begin to analyse how these events allowed him to emerge as Mao’s successor in the CCP
- Begin to analyse his relationship with Mao Zedong (and the reasons for this), to evaluate how this relationship brought implications to his political position
