About This Lesson

Focus: In this unit, students learn about daily, weekly, and seasonal weather and how weather occurs in patterns that can be used to plan activities. Students learn about severe weather conditions and how to collect information related to severe weather. Students will investigate what types of severe weather may occur in their area and how people communicate warnings related to severe weather. Students then develop plans to prepare for severe weather emergencies.

Number of Lessons: 4 lessons, divided in segments

Instruction Time: 15 lesson segments at 30-45 minutes per segment

Make observations to determine the effect of sunlight on Earth's surface.
Use tools and materials to design and build a structure that will reduce the warming effect of sunlight on an area.
Use and share observations of local weather conditions to describe patterns over time.
Ask questions to obtain information about the purpose of weather forecasting to prepare for, and respond to, severe weather.
