Read Chapter 20 "The Great Gum Machine" from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory aloud. Discuss the sounds made by the machine. students work in groups to invent their own candy and compose a piece of music that describes the sounds of the machine
I have done this lesson with my 5th grade class for the past 4 years. I have the students create a poster advertising their sweet, as well as draw a poster explaining what happens at each stage before they perform their composition. This year was special in that many groups created cardboard representations of their machines instead of drawing them. A great overall lesson that incorporates several disciplines.
