About This Lesson

What if every child in your classroom had a chance to speak, feel heard, and connect with someone new?

Connection Before Content is a simple, engaging 10-minute classroom activity designed to help students build friendships, practise active listening, develop communication skills, and strengthen their sense of belonging.

Using conversation cards and rotating partners, students take turns asking questions, sharing their thoughts, and listening respectfully to one another.

How the Lesson Works

  1. Find a Partner: Students pair up with a classmate.
  2. Choose a Question: Each pair selects a conversation card or listens as the teacher reads a question.
  3. Speak and Listen: Partner A shares their answer while Partner B listens without interrupting.
  4. Swap Roles: Partner B answers while Partner A practises active listening.
  5. Thank and Rotate: Students thank their partner, find someone new, and begin another conversation.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the activity, students will have opportunities to:

  • Practise speaking confidently and expressing their ideas.
  • Develop active listening and respectful communication skills.
  • Build positive connections with different classmates.
  • Recognise the importance of making others feel heard and included.
  • Reflect on what makes a good listener.

Perfect For:

  • Morning meetings and classroom connection routines
  • Social-emotional learning (SEL)
  • Building classroom community and belonging
  • Developing speaking and listening skills
  • Transitions between learning activities
  • Beginning-of-year relationship building

Grade Levels: Grades 3–6 (ages 8–12)
Duration: 10 minutes
Preparation: Minimal — conversation cards and a space for students to work in pairs.

Why This Activity Matters

Children can spend every day in the same classroom without having meaningful conversations with many of their classmates.

This activity creates structured opportunities for students to connect beyond their usual friendship groups, practise listening, and discover different perspectives.

Rather than simply telling children to be kind, respectful, or inclusive, teachers give them opportunities to practise those skills.

Connection Before Content is part of Hauora Education's teacher-led approach to creating calm, connected, learning-ready classrooms through small, repeatable routines.
