About This Lesson

A set of five printable counting worksheets for young children who are learning to connect numbers with quantities. Each page has five rows of matching animals. The child counts the animals in a row and writes the total in the empty box beside it. Quantities range from 1 to 8.

What is inside: five worksheets in full color, with animal illustrations on every page. Each worksheet has five rows, and the animals within a row are all the same kind, so the child counts one clear group at a time. Every row has its own answer box.

Skills practised: counting, matching a quantity to its written number, number writing, and visual attention. Looking carefully at one row at a time helps children focus on a single group.

Teaching suggestions: for younger children, start with the rows that hold only 1 to 3 animals. Count aloud together and point to each animal one by one. A small counter placed beside each animal as it is counted keeps the count accurate. For more challenge, ask the child to write the number without help and then explain how they counted. You can also compare two rows and ask which group has more animals and which has fewer.

Technical details: 5 pages, US Letter (8.5 × 11 inches), designed for color printing. You will need printer paper, a pencil or crayon, and a color printer.

Free to print and use at home or in the classroom.
