About This Lesson

Day of the Dead, dia de los Muertos lesson for early childhood.

Introduction: Show any photo of a sugar skull (online). Ask students what they think it is? What does it represent? Do you like it? Have you ever seen one of these before? Where? What do you know about it?  Hold a brief discussion.        

Vocabulary: Calavera (sugar skull), calacas (skeletons), tradition, Mexico, and celebrate

Closing: Ask students to define calavera, calaca, and why Dia de los Muertos is celebrated, not a scary day(not Halloween)?

Independent Activity: Chalk Calavera, calacas on dark paper(pre drawn outline)-student color designs. Print calavera to give general shape of calavera or calaca-students design, color, label picture.
