Students look at the headlines of newspaper articles for Ruth Ellis; the last woman in the UK to be hanged. This launches students into guided discussion about capital punishment; where they have a chance to practice all the communicating areas; such as presenting opinions and having collaborative conversations. Aligned with Common Core State Standard: SL.7.1

Standards

Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
