About This Lesson

This activity is intended to develop an understanding of what photo-ID is and how it is used in marine mammal research. Students are to match the numbered dorsal fin shots with the named catalogue shots on the photo-ID ‘board’. This is probably best done in groups. The resource needs to be prepared so that the numbered fin shots are cut up into separate cards which can then be moved around and placed onto the ID board. There is another photo-ID board with cards to use as an alternative; or in combination with the other boards (to make the activity more challenging)

A useful link to a website that allows you to understand the role of a marine biologist as well as providing useful pictures for the classroom. I'm sure many children will thoroughly enjoy learning about the ID process.
