About This Lesson

Teach about gun violence, media responsibility and resilience with these powerful civics teaching tools!

About the  Film

Gabby Giffords Won’t Back Downis an acclaimed documentary that tells the extraordinary story of former Arizona Congresswoman Gabby Giffords: her relentless fight to recover following an assassination attempt in 2011, and her new life as one of the most effective activists in the battle against gun violence.

About the Learning Guide

The Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down Learning Guide supports educators seeking new tools to address and discuss gun violence in the classroom. It can also be used to explore Gabby Giffords' broader life and career; career paths; civic engagement; media responsibility; mental health; and traumatic brain injury (TBI), aphasia, and disability.
The Learning Guide's key sections can each be used on their own or in collaboration with other key sections. The guide is flexible and appropriate for classroom use, community learning settings, homeschool learners, hybrid educational settings and independent exploration of the film. Each key section features a driving question, useful terms, personal reflection, discussion questions, extension activities and additional resources.

This is an excellent resource to teach with for Mental Wellness Month (January), National Gun Violence Survivor Week (January/February), CTE Month (February), Brain Injury Awareness Month (March), Women's History Month (March), National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (May), Aphasia Month (June), Gun Violence Awareness Month (June), Wear Orange Weekend (June), Gun Violence Awareness Day (June 7), Disability Price Month (July), Media Literacy Week (October), National Civics Day (October 27), and International Day of Persons with Disabilities (December 3).

A Gabby Giffords Won't Back Down Discussion Guide is also available through Journeys in Film. It can be used in classrooms or for public screenings.
