About This Lesson
Audience awareness is key to approaching academic writing. The tone, word-choice, and appeals are all determined by the targeted audience. Students are to find creative ways of appealing to a randomly selected target audience. They must discuss their appeals with their peers to see if they are successful in their appeals. However, some students will unknowingly select the same target audience. The class will also discuss whether or not they used similar appeals or different appeals and why.
