Today in the U.S., 26% of school-age children have an immigrant parent. Indeed, Migration is part and parcel of the human experience, and while it ebbs and flows, it is ubiquitous. As we have seen throughout history, in periods of mass migration, newcomers are often met with skepticism and distrust. Globally, we are experiencing a wave of anti-immigrant hatred in which misunderstandings about newcomers are being used sew division, undermining social, economic, and civic prospects for us all. Educating young people to learn to live with, work with, and respect our differences is essential for the survival of democracy. Adam Strom, Director of Re-Imagining Migration, will explore the impact of stereotyping on students and present a range of resources for educators and schools to use in the curriculum, the classroom, and school-wide, that will help students develop the academic, social/emotional, and civic skills to understand and respond to anti-immigrant prejudice.
