About This Lesson
With the current health concerns happening across our country and the world, the vast majority of students have been transitioned to online learning. This change can be a challenge for all involved. For the students themselves, their parents, and teachers, adjustments need to be made to make the experience as smooth as possible for all involved.
Have a Quiet Learning Space
First of all, set aside space for the student to use, similar to an easy work from home set up. The area should be quiet, so the child can concentrate on their school work, and be free of distractions. They should have access to a computer with the internet so they can access and complete their assignments, and preferably a few additions like headphones and a webcam..
Keep the Tech Simple
Keep in mind that the transition to online learning will be challenging for everyone and not all students or parents will be familiar with how to use a computer, or any technology that may be required.
Make sure that thorough instructions are given so it's easier for everyone to access the needed materials. If possible, you could make a short video tutorial that shows how to access the classroom and how to navigate through the system.
Be Flexible
Set very clear rules and guidelines so that all parties involved know what is expected, and can manage time better. By knowing the rules in advance, it will be easier for students to stick to them. Keep in mind that there will be a learning curve as students and parents become used to this new way of classwork, so be flexible and understanding of any errors or problems.
Keep Communication Open
Communication is key for online learning to be successful. Have regular and clear communication through emails and video chats and online live online instruction if possible.
Stay available to answer questions through emails or chats so the students or parents can ask questions about how to complete an assignment or how to use a certain technology.
Adjust the Curriculum
The curriculum itself may need to be adjusted since typical classroom instruction won't be able to take place any longer. You need to carefully go over the course work to determine what remains relevant and what assignments students are still able to complete. The method that the material is delivered may need to be changed so that students can clearly understand the material and get the most out of the learning experience.
Keep it Fun
One of the best things to do to help students become used to online learning is to keep them interested and engaged. Keeping the course material fun will help them to pay attention to it. This is especially important when they are learning from home with more distractions than usual.
Online learning is a change to change up the style of learning from video chats for the students to catch up with a teacher and with each other, to recorded video lessons and interactive online courses.
It's difficult enough to keep a child engaged in the classroom setting, but when they are at home it's even more challenging, so use this opportunity to explore new and exciting ways to present lessons.
Most likely, as time goes on, adjustments will have to be made to the online curriculum and teaching style in order to best meet the students' needs and so the students, teachers, and parents can all get the most out of this experience. Encourage feedback and communication so everyone can improve their methods. Although it can be challenging and most likely will not be an easy process, you can get a quality education from home.
