About This Lesson

The causation of The Civil War is far from a consensus, although the contribution of slavery is accepted by most modern day academics, the extent of the contribution in the nature of it is highly debated.  In Half Slave Half Free, Levine shows two separate cultures that grow to threaten the other’s way of life and the conflict caused by accommodations for the institution of slavery built into the Constitution of a country founded on freedom.  This lesson plan looks at the ideals and evolving actions, of John Quincy Adams regarding the issue of slavery.  The hope is that students will be able to connect the documents to the ideas and themes of Levine's half sleeve half free.
