About This Lesson

Explore the life and legacy of Jovita Idar, a Mexican-American teacher, journalist and civil rights advocate who challenged discrimination and fought for educational equality. In this short video, educator Sari Beth Rosenberg introduces students to Idar’s reporting, organizing and courageous stand against the Texas Rangers’ attempt to shut down a newspaper.

Accompanying worksheets for grades 5–8 and 9–12 help students deepen their understanding through comprehension questions, reflection and evidence-based writing. The grades 5–8 worksheet includes vocabulary and sequencing activities, while the grades 9–12 worksheet examines press freedom and Idar’s impact. Both include teacher guides with suggested answers.
