The kadambas were the First dynasty to be established in Karnataka. The Founder of the dynasty was Mayura Sharma. For better administration the kingdom was divided into Mandalas(provinces). Land revenue was the Main source of income. The occupations such as carpentry,goldsmithy,Blacksmithy,weaving,oil-extraction and pottery were the main occupations in the society. They were Followers of vedic Hinduism but Also encouraged Jainism and Buddism. First Prakrit and later Sanskrit became the court language. Kannada was the language of the people. The first inscription during the 5th century that depicts the kannada language was the Halmidi Inscription. The most prominent feature of their architecture was the shikara and it was in pyramid shape and rises in steps with a stupika or kalasha at the top.
