About This Lesson

6,000 grey seals live on the Farne Islands, a group of islands off the coast of Northumberland, UK. Each year, Ciaran Hatsell, and the National Trust's other rangers, carry out a census of the newborn seals. Up to 1,603 seal pups were born last year, and this year, 749 have been counted so far. The Farne Islands seal pup count is seen as a model for scientific research.
